Gumballs

When you hear the word gumball, what comes to mind? I'm sure it's a big gumball machine full of bright colourful round balls, right? Well, how about a brown gumball?

During a stroll yesterday evening, I came upon a great number of these ....

They're nicknamed sweetgum balls. They fall off the sweetgum tree in autumn, although at that time they are green in colour. As they dry out, the seeds pop out and what is left behind are these brown, prickly pods.

Interesting looking. I'm sure some crafty person would be able to make some sort of decoration out of them. Me, filling a clear bowl full of them is interesting enough.

The further south you go, the more prickly nature becomes.
