Easter?

While my friends back home in Sudbury are contemplating whether to celebrate Easter this weekend or Christmas (because of the snow), I'm enjoying the sight of beautiful rose bushes throughout Oklahoma City. Aren't they gorgeous?

You'll recall my blog a few days ago about the sweetgum ball pods. Today I discovered another type of tree pod. The sycamore pod.

They made me think of lollipops when I first saw them. Just need to be dipped in coloured candy. :)

The pod is a tight compact ball of seeds attached to a center core. Tufts of hair are connected to each seed. The hair ends are firmly held together (as though you were squeezing together a paint brush's bristles). That is the brown exterior you see. In time they will fall apart, where the wind will disperse their seeds, similar to that of a dandelion.

When I broke the pods open myself, they reminded me of a cattail in that they are fluffy on the inside.

The following picture I found on the Internet where you can see the pods still attached to the tree.

You guys up north can have the snow to remind you of Christmas. Me, I'll take the pods hanging from the sycamore trees to remind me of a Christmas tree. Nah, nah, nah-nah-nah!

When I was a kid, we had two sycamores in the backyard. Had forgotten about the balls, and the scaly bark. For all the million seeds that each tree produced every year, I don't remember a single little tree showing up. Perhaps they used birth control?
